Pharmaceutical label

Application areas of self-adhesive pharma-labels:

  • self-adhesive label for pills
  • self-adhesive label for medication
  • self-adhesive label for dietary supplements
  • labels for pharmaceutical packaging (PVC cans), in rolls, for automatic labeling

Labeling for the medical and pharmaceutical industry, in contrast to other sectors of label production, has a number of special features. We are not talking about an attractive glossy label to attract the attention of consumers. In this niche, the functional component of the label prevails over its external form.

In this case, special attention is paid to quality, which is the key.

Certain requirements must be met during the production of pharmaceutical „self-adhesive”. This applies to hygiene, various national quality standards, and other aspects.

Printing such complex, multifunctional labels requires comprehensive expertise in materials and bonding technologies. Printing company specialists must have in-depth knowledge of the complex processes and needs of the medical and pharmaceutical industry.

And here, the manufacturer of medical and pharmaceutical labels faces a number of nuances:

Applying the label to a small area of the medicine package.

Increased chemical activity of materials after sterilization of medicines.

Specific storage conditions.

Materials for making labels must not interact with the packaging material.

All this imposes additional responsibilities and requirements for the production of thermal labels for medical and pharmaceutical needs.

Choice of material for the production of drug labels:

  • semi-gloss and glossy paper: inexpensive and affordable, but poorly resistant to moisture;
  • laminated paper: beautiful, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage, but not suitable for all types of packaging because of its density;
  • polymer films: have an attractive appearance, durable, but their cost is higher than other materials;
  • thermal paper: is most often used for storing pharmaceutical products and labeling them at the point of sale;
  • self-adhesive pharma-material, which is made using a special technology.

    Features of pharmacy labels:

    First, the packaging of most drugs is very small, moreover, the shape of some drugs requires special labeling techniques. For example, ampoules and capsules need to be labeled. The bar code and text on such a small label must be legible. Standard sizes of pharmacy labels 30 mm x 20 mm. In pharmacies, most drug packages are small, not large, so small label sizes are most often used

    Secondly, after packaging and labeling, medicines are sterilized, which means that they are treated with hot steam, gamma rays, placed in gas chambers, etc. All of these methods require the use of special materials to make the label. Otherwise, the label will simply melt from the high temperature and lose its functionality. Therefore, the drug label is made of materials resistant to corrosive environments, high temperatures, and the use of durable adhesives, resistant inks and paints.

    Third, some pharmaceuticals require quite specific storage conditions, such as freezing or at least cold. In this case many types of film lose their elasticity. Consequently, the label material must be able to withstand temperature fluctuations.

Label materials must not interact with or penetrate the packaging material, much less react chemically with preparations during sterilization or storage.
